Frequently Asked Questions – Answered by Doc Robyn
How did you become an expert in communication and conflict?
“I have not always been an expert. If you were to look back at the yearly reviews from when I was in my early 20’s working in banking you would see that many of my supervisors thought I couldn’t communicate at all. I know now that was because I told the truth with very little tact. When I was working on my undergraduate degree (which I started in my early 30’s) I became really interested in a consultation technique called Motivational Interviewing (MI). It shows how to be honest and straightforward without shutting people down. While getting my doctorate I combined MI with information available on Emotional Intelligence and I found I could really make a difference in people’s lives (including my own) by teaching how to have healthy communication and productive conflict. That isn’t to say I am always perfect at using it. (Laughs) I still get lazy sometimes and fall back into my old, bad communication habits.”
Why did you start Champion Performance Development?
“Champion Performance Development came into existence because I couldn’t find a company who was providing the strategies used for organizational development in the corporate world in an athletic setting. I knew coaches, athletes and other people who didn’t have access to high level executive coaching could benefit from the leadership, teamwork, communication and conflict skills used in the business world. Just as much, I knew the corporate world could benefit from the information coming out of athletic success. I did not want a job where my skills as an athlete and team player were only benefiting executives. It was important to me to be able to span both the athletic and corporate worlds. Champion Performance Development was born so I could make that happen.”
“In working with teams and individuals I have seen firsthand the damage that comes from gossip, backstabbing, grudges, catty behavior and emotional bullying. Seeing reality TV stars glorified for engaging in drama frustrated me. The more egregious their drama the better they are paid, but it doesn’t work like that for the rest of us. For regular people the more drama we have the more miserable we are. I knew I was providing skills to my clients that were able to stop the drama and making a positive difference in their lives. I believe everyone deserves and owes themselves a better way to deal with conflict. I wanted to find a way to help more people. The Stop the Drama! Campaign grew naturally out of my work and now I am trying to pay it forward by touching the lives of as many people as possible.”
How did you develop the Seven No Fail Secrets to Stop the Drama?
“The Seven No Fail Secrets to Stop the Drama came directly out of my work with college athletes. I noticed that the individuals I was consulting were all coming in with similar communication/conflict related issues and that I was giving the same type of advice over and over. When I started doing team development the topics where different but the solution of teaching healthy communication and productive conflict was the same. The Seven No Fail Secrets became the outline to explain what I was going to teach, how it was going to make a difference and to help each person remember how they can control the outcome of a disagreement. Now I offer the Seven No Fail Secrets to anyone who asks; simply because I believe that everyone should have the opportunity to create a happier life for themselves.”
Do the Nine Secrets to Great Teamwork really work?
“Absolutely!” Teams who understand and use the Nine Secrets to Great Teamwork simply perform better. They work better together, get more from their potential and are fun to lead/coach. In fact, people who have been through my coaching and use my strategies say these nine secrets along with the Seven No Fail Secrets to Stop the Drama make a difference in their everyday lives; how they interact with others. I often receive emails and messages from past clients saying the skills they learned with me have made them happier, helped them develop better personal relationships and made a positive difference in their professional lives too. Knowing the secrets I share are beneficial to others is really rewarding for me.”
